Challenge

Sankey diagrams are a common way to show flows in research, but building them by hand from raw data is slow and error-prone, and every chart has to be exported in several formats.

Approach

1. Automated the aggregation of raw data into source-to-target flows.
2. Generated Sankey diagrams in our visual style directly from the aggregated data.
3. Added automatic export to vector and raster formats.
4. Built the utility with AI coding assistants.

What we delivered

• A utility that aggregates data and builds Sankey diagrams.

Outcome

Sankey diagrams that used to be assembled by hand are now generated from data, with print and web formats exported in one step.
