Challenge

Energy and commodities research often depends on geography: where power plants are, how coal and other goods are traded between regions, how indicators differ by province. These stories need maps, not tables.

Approach

  1. Used shaded-relief regional maps to place assets such as coal power plants in their landscape.
  2. Built global trade-flow maps to show the direction and size of trade between countries.
  3. Published interactive choropleths in Datawrapper, for example China's net exports by province, so readers can explore the data themselves.
